The unlikely sport of wrestling made its debut in the local arena in 1939 (Aurora Banner June 16th). This popular event found a ready audience in Aurora. In 1947, world champion Whipper Billy Watson headlined a fundraising match at the Aurora Armoury (Aurora Banner May 1st). In June 1952 wrestling as a regular Friday night event was introduced by the town’s Recreation Director (Aurora Banner, July 3rd).
