International Cat Day

A postcard with a watercolour image of six cats standing upright on a boardwalk and greeting each other as they pass, with clouds and birds in the sky and blue water in the background. All cats are wearing colourful bows around their necks, one cat is tipping its top hat, and two cats are holding umbrellas while smaller cats hold their other paw. One cat on the far left side is standing on the railing of the boardwalk looking out at the water

The artwork on this postcard was created by Helena J. Maguire (1860-1909), a watercolourist whose most popular subjects were children, cats and dogs. Her anthropomorphic cats were reproduced as postcards during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This postcard (995.22) was sent to Aurora resident Mrs. Fricker.
